Platform for photographers: how to choose yours

Platform for photographers: how to choose yours

A platform for photographers is an online service that brings together everything that happens after the shoot: uploading photos, organizing them by client or event, sharing them in private galleries, letting the client choose or download and, if you want, selling them. The best one for you is the one that fits how you actually deliver: access control (password, downloads on or off), a polished experience on the client's phone, built-in payments if you sell photos, and a public showcase to win new work.

In this guide you'll see which features really matter, how a professional platform differs from Drive, WeTransfer or WhatsApp, a checklist for choosing one, and how to set it all up step by step with Ftens.

What is a platform for photographers (and what is it for)?

It's the tool where your work goes from "files on your drive" to "professional delivery". Instead of moving folders from one service to another, the photographer:

  1. Uploads photos (and sometimes videos) to a gallery.
  2. Organizes galleries by project: a wedding, a portrait session, a corporate event.
  3. Shares a single link with the client, public or protected.
  4. Controls what each person can see and download.
  5. Measures whether the client has viewed the photos and which ones they download.
  6. Monetizes the gallery by selling single photos or packs.

Features a good platform for photographers should have

1. Private galleries with access control

For weddings, newborn or corporate portraits, privacy is a requirement. Look for at least:

  • Password-protected galleries.
  • The option to turn downloads off so the gallery is view-only.
  • Links that don't expire unexpectedly, so the client doesn't have to ask you for the link again.

2. Organization by projects and galleries

If you shoot dozens of sessions a year, you need a clear structure: one project per client, brand or type of work, with several galleries inside (for example "Engagement", "Ceremony", "Party").

3. Client photo selection (proofing)

Choosing photos is usually the slowest part of a job. A good platform lets the client mark favorites and leave notes through a private link, and lets you download only what was selected. No more screenshots and emails saying "I like 23 and 47…".

4. Built-in photo sales

If you shoot events, sports or schools, selling from the gallery turns delivery into revenue. What matters: a watermarked preview, secure card payment, download of purchased photos only, and an orders dashboard.

5. Public portfolio and visibility

Delivery galleries are private; your showcase isn't. Ideally the same platform lets you publish a portfolio page with your best projects, on your own link or domain, and appear in a directory where new clients can find you.

6. Gallery analytics

Knowing how many views and downloads each gallery has ends the classic "have you seen it yet?" and tells you which photos people like most.

7. Brand and design

Templates for galleries and projects, a watermark with your logo, and a professional URL. Clients judge the service by how they receive the photos.

8. Extras that make a difference

  • Videos alongside photos in the same gallery.
  • Guest uploads via QR code or link, moderated before publishing.
  • Batch upload or sync from your computer if you handle high volume.

How to choose your platform: a 6-step checklist

  1. Define your real workflow. Do you deliver everything, or does the client choose first? Do you sell photos or only deliver? Do you need a public portfolio?
  2. Estimate your volume. Number of projects and galleries per year and the storage you need. Compare each plan's limits, not just the price.
  3. Test the client experience on mobile. Open a test gallery on your phone: loading, navigation, download and, if relevant, checkout.
  4. Check the privacy options. Password, view-only, and whether you can change them gallery by gallery.
  5. Look at the selling terms. Payment provider, platform fee per plan, and what the buyer sees before paying.
  6. Start for free. If there's a free plan, use it with a real session before paying. That way you validate the workflow with an actual client.

How to do it with Ftens, step by step

Ftens is a platform for photographers focused on creating professional client galleries, selling them with Stripe and showing your work in a portfolio. Here's how to set up the full workflow:

Step 1: Create your free account

Sign up at ftens.com/sign-up. The Free plan includes 1 project, 5 galleries and 50 GB of storage, and already lets you sell galleries. Paid plans (Basic, Pro and Advanced) add projects, galleries, storage and features; check the current details in the plans section.

Step 2: Create a project and its galleries

Group galleries by project: one place for each wedding, session or event. Inside, create as many galleries as your plan allows and upload your photos by dragging them in (JPEG, PNG, WebP, plus RAW, CR2 and CR3). If you're unsure where each file should live, see where to upload your photos as a photographer. From the Basic plan you can also upload videos and bulk import whole folders. Pro and Advanced also include a desktop agent for Mac or PC that automatically uploads photos from a watched folder.

Step 3: Set privacy

Decide what each client sees and when: a public gallery or a password-protected one, with downloads allowed or view-only. Note that on the Free plan photos download with a watermark; from the Basic plan up (Basic, Pro and Advanced) clients download the original file, without a watermark. Detailed guide: how to share photos with clients privately.

Step 4: If the client has to choose, use client selection

On the Pro and Advanced plans you can create a gallery in Client selection mode: you generate a private link, the client marks favorites and leaves notes without signing up, you get an email when they finish, you download a ZIP of the selected files and publish the gallery when it's ready. Full guide: client photo selection.

Step 5: Share the link

Send the gallery URL to your client. Depending on your settings, they can view it, download photos one by one or request a ZIP of the gallery, which arrives by email. To understand which kind of gallery suits each case, read online photo gallery: what it is and how to create one. For events, you can enable guest uploads via QR code or link (Pro and Advanced plans) and moderate photos before publishing: how to share your gallery with a QR code.

Step 6: Sell photos from the same gallery

Connect Stripe once (Stripe Connect Express) and mark the gallery as paid. You can sell per photo, per pack or the whole gallery, and set prices and currency for each album. The client sees a watermarked preview, pays by card and downloads only what they bought. You see orders in your sales dashboard. Sales are available on every plan: with a platform fee on Free and Basic, and no fee on Pro and Advanced. More details: sell your galleries from Ftens.

Step 7: Measure and showcase your work

  • Analytics: views and downloads per gallery in your dashboard. Advanced analytics are included from the Basic plan.
  • Portfolio (Pro and Advanced): a public page at ftens.com/p/your-name with a hero, bio and featured projects, the option to appear in the photographers directory and to connect your own domain. More in online portfolio for photographers.

Frequently asked questions

What is a platform for photographers?

It's an online service where photographers upload their photos, organize them into galleries by client or event and share them with a link, with privacy and download controls. Many add favorites selection, photo sales and a public portfolio.

What's the best way to share photos with clients?

A private online gallery: a single link, password-protected if needed, where the client sees the photos in good quality and downloads what they're entitled to. It avoids WhatsApp compression and expiring links.

Can I start for free?

Yes. On Ftens the Free plan includes 1 project, 5 galleries and 50 GB of storage, and lets you sell galleries with a platform fee. Downloads carry a watermark; from the Basic plan they're delivered without one.

Can I sell my photos from the gallery?

Yes. On Ftens you connect Stripe once and sell per photo, per pack or the whole gallery. The client sees a watermarked preview, pays by card and downloads only what they bought. Available on all plans.

Does the client need an account to view or choose photos?

No. The client opens the gallery link (and enters the password, if you set one). In Ftens' Client selection mode they don't need to sign up to mark favorites and leave notes either.

Can I have my own portfolio and domain?

Yes, on Ftens' Pro and Advanced plans: a public page at ftens.com/p/your-name, optional listing in the /photographers directory and your own domain to show the portfolio at the root of your website.
